Text and image

This is my own handwriting: Italic. Joined up. Serif.

Here I rewrote the words freehand in a descriptive fashion:

I looked at the words and went through font styles to express the feeling of the words I wanted to describe. This was so interesting and really highlights the importance of text and image, I lesson I have needed to learn. With each word, I looked for the meanings I wanted to capture with my font styles:

BIG (Liberation Serif ) small (Angsana New)

BIG - Bold, a presence, obvious.
Small - Minute, hidden, almost invisible.

Fat (AR Delaney) Thin (DilleniaUPC)

Fat - Rounded, squidgy, spongy.
Thin - Tall, slender, slight.

Fast (Vijaya) Slow (AR Hermann)

Fast - Itallic, speedy, in motion.
Slow - Heavy, stationary, embroiled.

Fun (Segoe Print) Boring (Microsoft Uighur)

Fun - Jovial, clumsy, innocent.
Boring - Non descript, plain, unexciting.

Calm (AR Decode) Mad (AR Destine)

Calm - Peaceful, flowing.
Mad - sharp, pointed.

Moodboard:

Here as requested I wrote the words once again freehand, coping the styles of my selected fonts. I cut out each word individually and played with colours and textures. I then attached each word to a mood board and explored textures, imagery, colour and media qualities. The mood board filled really quickly. I used materials, wrapping, threads, images, additional words and figures to describe the word and font.

Reflections:

Satisfying. To date I haven't given text and image a primary focus so it was fantastic to have the opportunity to do so. I loved my mood board. I made an effort to include as much as I possibly could on an A3 sheet of card. I was particularly keen to use a varied collection of textures and colours. I felt like I really got to "know" the words and understand how they could express themselves.. I naturally write in a joined up classic fashion, nearly always in pencil or black in so it was a fantastic tool to incorporate as much corresponding colour as I could. An exercise I will be taking forward with me in future tasks
