Key Steps in Illustration
Module Evaluation
This module has been experimental, creative, imaginative and a whole lot of learning!
I have experimented with various mediums, made mistakes, pushed my imagination and struggled up very steep hills. This module has been a huge learning curve and on reflection, an incredible journey.
Not only have I completed this module, but I have also enjoyed developing my personal work along the way, establishing consistency in style and gaining confidence that I'm building on day after day. As much as I have many pages of illustrative work for this module, I also have a bulging sketch book of my own pages and I am grateful to have been pushed with this journey of learning into developing as an artist.
Along the way, I have followed with interest the work of children's illustrator Rachel Bright along with Illustrator Charlie Mackesy, I feel fortunate to have followed his drawings to the fruition of his book 'The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse' and eventually seeing his drawing in real life at his London exhibit. I have also appreciated the work of Quentin Blake, watching many of his Penguin short tutorials online. I visited the Tate Liverpool exploring abstract paintings, the work of Lowry and visited the work of Tracey Emin in the touring 'In my shoes' exhibit. I took the rare opportunity to see original Leonardo Da Vinci 'A Life in Drawings' this year. This module has given me the opportunity to study illustrations in a completely different light, with the study of lines and movement, colour and words, both the old, new and emerging, I see so much more in a drawing than I ever did before this module, an education I am grateful for. My mind is open wide!
I have tried to approach each exercise and assignment in a creative and imaginative way, even though not always successful, each time I have pushed myself to think differently, I have opened my imagination to greater heights.
By the end of Part five, I felt confident my tutor understood my style, his summary at the end is spot on and exactly how I would describe myself. I had a good understanding of what worked for me during this module and what didn't. At times I chose experimentation over a pleasing end result, I feel that the mistakes I made here were as valuable to my learning as my successes.
I have taken my tutors advice on pieces to include, trusting his judgement completely. I have selected 10 pieces that show a wide range of work, hopefully showing a piece of who I am in each one.
- Part Two - Black and White - As advised by my tutor, I feel this piece shows my first use of precise lines and experimentation. A striking piece.
- Part Two - Visual metaphors - As advised by my tutor. A fun piece and that shows my emerging style of drawing.
- Part Three - Image development - As advised by my tutor. One of my favourite sketches to produce.
- Assignment Three - A poster - Here I interviewed a local band and presented an illustration combing researched history and my thought processes.
- Part Four - A menu card - As advised by my tutor. A simple example of my drawing in black and white.
- Part Four - Visual distortion. As advised by my tutor. This work displays freedom and creativity. .
- Assignment Four - Magazine Illustration - As advised by my tutor. An example of the journey from objective drawing to illustration.
- Part Five - Packaging - One of my strongest researched pieces.
- Part Five - Educational strip - An example of communicating an important message through images.
- Assignment Five - Seven Days - A completed piece that I feel shows who I am as an artist. An example of my imagination and style.
