Packaging  The brief:  Produce a series of illustrations for packaging to be used for a new range of organic biscuits for children. There are three varieties in the range - "Raisin, Choc chip and Ginger" biscuits. The client specifically wants three illustrations featuring extinct animals interacting in some fun way with a biscuit to be used on the boxes. The drawings should be in full colour and the client would like the colours to reflect the 'flavour' of the biscuit. Research:  I started by taking a good look at the market. The question - how will you stand out amongst others? I think the subject I will be working with, extinct animals does give me an advantage here as it is different and attractive to children, I could not find any other brand using this subject matter. Text and image This is my own handwriting: Italic. Joined up. Serif. Here I rewrote the words freehand in a descriptive fashion:  I looked at the words and went through font styles to express the feeling of the words I wanted to describe. This was so interesting and really highlights the importance of text and image, I lesson I have needed to learn. With each word, I looked for the meanings I wanted to capture with my font styles:  BIG (Liberation Serif ) small (Angsana New) BIG - Bold, a presence, obvious.  Small - Minute, hidden, almost invisible.   Fat (AR Delaney) Thin (DilleniaUPC) Fat - Rounded, squidgy, spongy.  Thin - Tall, slender, slight.  Fast (Vijaya) Slow (AR Hermann) Fast - Itallic, speedy, in motion.   Slow - Heavy, stationary, embroiled.   Fun (Segoe Print) Boring (Microsoft Uighur) Fun - Jovial, clumsy, innocent.  Boring - Non descript, plain, unexc...

Travel guides The brief:  'To produce three illustrations for a series of book jackets at the size on an existing travel guide for the locations Istanbul, Helsinki and Milan.  The client would like you to create illustrations in which many element are brought together in a diagrammatic way. They would also like the type to be hand drawn in an appropriate style'.  I haven't visited any of these cities so I'm going to rely heavily on reference examples to help guide me through my ideas and drawings.  Research:  Examples of travel guides...  All of these examples contain photos. Editorial Illustration  As asked I went through my newspaper today and looked for an illustration, this is the one I came across:  "We're like panting 'Reservoir Dogs' on Platform" Is this illustration decorative, conceptual or informational?  Informational. It informs the visual eye of the scene that is set.  Does it use a metaphor to convey an idea or does it have a narrative base?  A Narrative base .  Is it representational, abstract or diagrammatic?  Representational.  This article discusses Ian McMillan's experience of his train commute and the ongoing "nervousness" of the number of carriages that will be available on his train vs the number of travellers.
