OCA Illustration Assignment 1

Say Hello...A greetings card...

So today, the 16th of May 2018 I start this Degree programme in Illustration...

Feeling rather scared and overwhelmed I sketch a little to distract my mind, and reassure myself...
Having a large, wild, overgrown garden just outside of my window...It is not hard to see the many dandelions looking at me. The perfect sketch today though. 'It will all be OK' I tell myself. Mind calmed.

So back to the task in hand. A greetings card to my tutor. I need to work out what I want to say about myself...
Sat with a pen and paper, let's work this out.

I enjoy to think of life in a quirky and fun way, looking at everyday things (such as the dandelion above) and capturing them in ink, which is my preferred medium. It is the small things in life that inspire me the most, a ripe pear, clouds in the sky, bumble bees busy at their work, nature. I try to take notice of them all, I believe that is where beauty truly lies.. And I love to draw.

I have wanted to study a degree for such a long time, it really has been a long time coming, years of conversations, therefore I want to include a symbol of time within my greetings card design. I also want to include the apple I have sitting in my fruit bowl.. That little something, noticing those small, everyday, beautiful things I mention.

Expressing my emotions at this time are also important. I feel fearful and nervous of my capabilities and excited, really excited about this new adventure.  This degree will see how far I can go... Can I fly? This is a new adventure, a new world. I visualise myself flying on a hot air balloon, which happens to be the shape of this apple... "Welcome to the World"

Can I fly? Maybe I can't yet, so I make the decision not to be on this balloon...

A good start but I need to show the significance of time...

So an apple, a balloon flying in the sky with the time hanging from it, with me missing. An adventure... is what I decide. This reflects who I am and includes my love of drawing in ink, nature, my anxieties at this time, the significance of time and my playful mind. This is hand drawn onto a card for my tutor... The end result!
